Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in water and electricity. The country’s population, often a benchmark of social and economic strength, is very young with 58.9% of people less than 20 years old. School enrolment is also very low; 20% of children are not enrolled in school and 60% of those who do register end up dropping-out before they complete their studies. Child and infant mortality is also very high in this part of the world, with 20% of children not making it to their fifth birthday, oftentimes due to malnutrition.

Save the Children has been working in Boucle du Mouhoun, Cascades, Hauts Bassins and Kaya districts of Burkina Faso since 1986. Our work focuses on:

  1. Helping vulnerable children secure their rights to protection from exploitation and abuse
  2. Ensuring children gain a quality education
  3. Improving access to life-saving health and nutrition services

What we do

  • We develop, implement and evaluate programs to improve the working conditions of children who work in the agricultural sector, namely in cotton, shea and rice farming
  • We build strong partnership and engage communities to develop and enforce codes of conduct to help create a safe environment for working children
  • We provide vulnerable children and youth with skills training
  • We work with international and local stakeholders to implement protection mechanisms and promote the rights of domestic workers and children working in mines
  • We use an innovative education methodology known as “All for one and one for all” that uses a child-friendly school model to provide quality basic education for children while encouraging a strong sense of responsibility and participation
  • We support the Burkina Faso government’s 2006-2015 national strategy and plan which aims to prevent maternal, infant and child deaths
  • We promote community-based breastfeeding to improve infant survival and development in the Kaya and Banfora health districts
  • We help raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and support campaigns aimed at preventing the spread of HIV among children and youth
