Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) ranks as the worst conflict zone in the world in which to be a woman or child.

Nearly 36,000 women die in DRC every single year because they don’t have access to quality reproductive health care. Save the Children works to provide lifesaving reproductive health care and community sensitization activities in an effort to reduce maternal and child mortality and morbidity in North Kivu.

What We Do

  • We’re providing 4,000 pregnant women with reproductive health care services at 9 health centers.
  • We are upgrading and equipping a health centre to enable the delivery of emergency obstetric care (including caesareans).
  • We’re training health centers staff on reproductive health in emergencies and on comprehensive reproductive health care in all supported health centers.

To complement and reinforce these direct medical interventions, we are also delivering an integrated package of Community Health Worker (CHW) training and community sensitization activities focused on vulnerable groups including children, adolescents at risk of early pregnancy, expectant parents and youth club members. These  training and sensitization activities focus on increasing basic life skills related to early infant and child care, prenatal health and nutrition, family planning, health and hygiene as well as child protection.

In addition, Save the Children is working with local service providers, CHW and community leaders to organize and design referral systems. This will ensure that community members, especially women and children, have access to the health, education and protection services they require.
