Eighteen hundred newborns die each year from unsafe deliveries in Paraguay and at least 1,500 children lose their mother from preventable causes related to childbirth. This is just the beginning. The country is at the top of adolescent pregnancy in Latin America (along with countries such as Haiti). This statistic is critical as 25% of deaths of children less than 19 years are due to clandestine abortions.

Life expectancy in Paraguay is 72 years and the elementary enrollment rate is 90%; however, the quality of education in the country is extremely low and the number of students who graduate from high schools is ever decreasing. Statistics show that the dropout rate in the country is approximately 35%. School repetition and poor results - phenomena that frequently precede dropping out - seriously limit the educational system's potential for acting as a mechanism for equal opportunity and social inclusion.

What we do

Master’s program on child rights

Save the Children Canada supports a network of eight universities in the region in the realization of a Master’s Program in Children’s Rights. Twenty students have graduated from this program to date from the University of Columbia in Asuncion. These professionals are now better prepared to provide an improved support to the work in favor of children, both in Government agencies and non-profit organizations. Children throughout the continent are benefiting from improved local and national policies and higher quality programs that respond to their needs and the needs of their families.
